Account deletion
Delete your DeepChinese account and data
Last updated: September 24, 2026
This page is the official account-deletion route forDeepChinese (Android packagecom.deepchinese), the Chinese-character learning app published on Google Play, with iOS and web versions to follow, and on the web at deepchinese.nl. Anyone can use it — you do not need to be logged in anywhere to make a request.
Accounts are optional, so there are two situations
DeepChinese needs no account, and everything is created on your own device by default. If you never signed in, we hold nothing about you: there is no account to delete, and wiping the app's data on your device (route 2 below) is the whole job. If youdid create an account, your synced study data lives on our account backend in Switzerland, and route 1 deletes it in seconds.
How to delete — choose your route
Delete your account in the app (fastest, if you signed in)
Open DeepChinese and go to Settings → Account, then chooseDelete account. You will be asked to confirm by typing, because this cannot be undone. Deleting your account removes the sign-in record and everything attached to it: your synced favorites, spaced-repetition progress, Deep Drill and HSK-practice results, flashcard lists and saved preferences, your profile fields, your device registrations and your entitlement mirror. Copies on your phone stay until you also do route 2.
Clear what is stored on your devices
This removes the data the app created locally, which our servers never saw unless you signed in:
- Android: systemSettings → Apps → DeepChinese → Storage & cache → Clear data. To remove the app entirely, tap Uninstall.
- iOS: long-press the DeepChinese icon and chooseRemove App → Delete App. Deleting the app removes its on-device data.
- Web app: clear the site's stored data in your browser (for example Settings → Privacy → Site data → DeepChinese). This also removes your saved language preference.
- Other devices: signed in on a tablet or an old phone? Deleting the account (route 1) removes the server copy, but run this route on each device to clear its local leftovers, or ask us (route 3) and we will tell you which devices are registered.
Ask us from the web or by e-mail
Use this if you no longer have the app, cannot remember which account you used, want a copy of your data first, or would simply rather not do it yourself. One e-mail is the request we act on:
privacy@deepchinese.nlSubject: “Account deletion request — DeepChinese”
To find the right records, tell us:
- the e-mail address you signed in with, or the address you contacted us from,
- your Google Play or App Store order number if you bought Pro, and
- roughly when you used the app — anything that identifies your correspondence or purchase is enough.
We may reply once to confirm the request before deleting, so we do not destroy the wrong record. Writing from the address you signed in with usually skips that step.
Using Pro through a subscription? Deleting your account does not cancel billing, and store subscriptions cannot be cancelled from here. Cancel in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions or in App Store → your name → Subscriptions; from inside the app, Settings links to the same screen.
What is deleted
- Your sign-in record — the e-mail address (or the Google/Apple identifier) and the credentials that go with it.
- Your synced study data — favorites, spaced-repetition progress, Deep Drill and HSK-practice results, flashcard lists and the synced preferences (theme, language, character style), stored as documents under your account.
- Profile and device records — display name, created and last-seen timestamps, and the per-install device identifiers used for merging.
- The entitlement mirror — the record that says your account has Pro, plus the matching customer record at our payment provider.
- Analytics linkage — the link between your anonymous usage and error events and your account, so any surviving events are no longer about you.
- Support correspondence tied to you, on request; include the thread or its date so we find the right one.
What is kept, and for how long
- Data on devices we never saw — if you never signed in, we never had a copy, so nothing here applies and there is nothing for us to delete. Removing it is route 2.
- Google Play / App Store records — your store account, order history and payment data are held by Google and Apple, not by us. Ask them; we cannot delete those, and we cannot see them beyond the entitlement signal they send us.
- Purchase and accounting records — receipts needed for taxes and financial bookkeeping are kept for as long as applicable tax and commercial law requires (in practice up to seven years from the transaction), in a form limited to what that law demands.
- Database backups — the live deletion is not undone by a restore: encrypted backups are overwritten as backup cycles expire, and we do not recover personal data from them after deletion.
- Legal holds — if a specific record must be preserved by law or for a legal claim, we keep only that record, tell you why, and delete it as soon as the obligation ends.
Where your data was, and what happens afterwards
Synced account data is hosted in Switzerland by our account-backend provider; the deletion above removes it there. Deletion is permanent — we cannot recover your lists, progress or Pro entitlement for you afterwards, and a purchase cannot be re-linked without buying again. Installing DeepChinese again starts from a blank slate, with the first 500 character panels free as always, and you can create a fresh account or keep using the app signed out.
How long it takes
Account deletion from inside the app happens immediately. Requests made by e-mail are carried out without undue delay and within30 days; GDPR Art. 12(3) sets the same one-month limit for requests from Europe, and US state laws such as the CCPA/CPRA get their own 45-day clock, which we also meet. We reply once it is done.
