3,188 characters · one story at a time

Learn every Chinese character, one story at a time

DeepChinese turns all 3,188 characters into memorable little stories — arranged in a single simplicity ranking from first contact to fluent reading, each built from its components, with pinyin, audio for every character, stroke-order writing practice and HSK vocabulary. Seven hundred graded stories then put those characters to work.

The real app, in motion

Not mockups — real, moving captures of DeepChinese. Watch it draw a character stroke by stroke, flip a card, match sounds, judge your handwriting, narrow a search and switch themes.

Stroke order: the character 永 drawing itself, stroke by stroke

Stroke order

Every character draws itself, stroke by stroke.

Writing practice: a traced stroke being checked and accepted

Writing practice

Trace the faint stroke — the app checks order, shape and where you start.

Flashcards: a card flips to reveal the answer, then grading

Flashcards

Reveal the answer, grade it, and the next card arrives.

Match game: pairing a sound with its meaning, a wrong pair shakes red

Match

Pair each sound with its meaning; a wrong pair shakes red.

Search: typing pinyin narrows the results live

Search

Type pinyin — tone marks optional, no Chinese keyboard.

Themes: the interface switching from light to dark

Themes

17 themes, including a warm, bookish dark mode.

The word bank

Search it, open it, see what it’s made of

The decks teach 3,188 characters, but Chinese has far more words than that. So the app carries a whole dictionary too: 121,431 words from CC-CEDICT, searchable by character, by reading — typed plainly, no tone marks — or by English, and studyable in decks of 500.

pengyou

王

king
  • 国王guó wángking
  • 王国wáng guókingdom
  • 王子wáng zǐprince
  • Search that forgives your keyboard: pinyin typed plainly, no tone marks needed — and the English meaning finds the word just as well.
  • Open a word, see its parts: every entry shows its readings, its meanings and the characters it is built from — each one a tap from its own page.
  • And the other way round: each character page lists the words that contain it, most used first, so 王 leads with 国王 and 王子.

Character stories

Every character has a story

Each of the 3,188 panels pairs a character with a short, vivid mnemonic built from its real components — so 王 isn't random strokes, it's one + two + scepter. Stories compose exactly the way characters do.

  • 3,188 panels in one simplicity ranking: from 一 (one) to the rarest graphs, each with pinyin, definition, strokes and frequency rank.
  • Component navigation: tap any component chip (#40, #44…) to jump straight to that building block.
  • Search everything: find characters by hanzi, pinyin — tone marks optional — English meaning or component name.
Flashcards & spaced repetition

Drill it until it sticks

Build your own flashcard lists from any characters, then study with tap-to-flip cards. An Anki-style scheduler brings each card back at the moment you're about to forget it. Preparing for an exam? All 908 HSK characters are woven directly into the main sequence where they belong by simplicity — plus HSK word decks in both the 2021 HSK 3.0 and the classic standard.

  • Custom lists: bookmark any character into a list; per-list direction (meaning ↔ character) and shuffle.
  • Smart scheduling: rate every card Again, Hard, Good or Easy — the app spaces the reviews for you.
  • Deep Drill typing: three rounds per character — meaning, pinyin and typing — in graded sets across levels.
Audio & writing

Hear it. Write it. Remember it.

Every character and HSK word comes with audio — 13,100 clips bundled in the app, so listening practice works offline. Watch the stroke order animate stroke by stroke, then write the character yourself with hands-on writing practice.

  • Audio everywhere: tap any character or word to hear it, in one consistent voice across all 3,188 panels and the word decks.
  • Stroke-order animation: every character draws itself in the correct order, at whatever pace you need.
  • Writing practice: trace and write on screen, with brush-stroke rendering that feels like paper.
HSK practice

Exam-style practice for every level

The HSK word decks cover both standards — 11,079 words across the 2021 HSK 1–9 levels and the classic 1–6 lists — and a dedicated practice mode tests each deck eight different ways: fill in the blank, match the sound, type the word, dictation and more.

  • Eight exercise types: fill in the blank, match the sound, true-or-false listening, word assembly, dictation and more.
  • Session scores: mixed sessions across a whole deck with a 60% pass mark, and favorites for the words that trip you up.
  • Grammar built in: 21 grammar points for HSK 1–3 with example sentences, translated into every interface language.
Graded reading

Read it, don't just recognise it

Seven hundred short stories ship with the app — a hundred for each HSK band, each one written using only the characters that band has already taught. You can read a story at your level from start to finish without a dictionary, and the characters you have been drilling turn into something you are actually reading.

  • 700 stories, 100 per band: from HSK 1 to HSK 7–9 — original everyday stories low down, and retellings of ancient fables, idiom stories and folk tales higher up.
  • Tap any word to define it: reading never needs a dictionary, but tapping a word opens its pinyin and meaning in a bubble, with the full entry a tap away.
  • Nothing above your level: a story at band N uses only the characters allowed at band N and below — checked over the whole corpus, so a learner never meets a character they have not been taught.
The whole dictionary

Every word, not just the graded ones

The decks teach 3,188 characters; Chinese has a great many more words than that. So the app also carries 121,431 words from CC-CEDICT, the free community Chinese–English dictionary — searchable by character, reading or English, and studyable in decks of 500.

  • 121,431 words, most-used first: ordered by how often each word is actually used, so the first deck you open is 的, 是, 在, 我, 不 — not an alphabetical accident.
  • See what a word is made of: open any word for its readings, its meanings and the characters it is built from, each one a tap from its own page.
  • Mostly pieces you already know: 98,959 of the dictionary's words are made entirely of characters the deck teaches — and every character page lists the words containing it, most used first.
Streaks & leaderboards

Progress you can see — and a little friendly rivalry

A streak counts your study days and tells you honestly whether it is safe, at risk or broken. Achievements mark the milestones, and two leaderboards rank weekly dedication and all-time progress — climb under a pseudonym: your score is public, your identity is not.

  • Daily streak: study today to keep it safe; streak achievements at 3, 7 and 30 days.
  • Two leaderboards: a weekly board for study sessions and an all-time board for characters learned, with your own row pinned.
  • Pseudonymous: pick a display name — boards show names, never accounts.
Everyday studying

A habit that survives busy weeks

Save favorites with one tap, get up to three gentle study reminders a day, and choose from 17 themes in light or dark — including a warm, bookish dark mode. Study offline-first with no account, or sign in with an e-mail code and your progress quietly syncs across your devices.

  • Favorites & reminders: heart any card or detail page, and get up to three study reminders a day.
  • Sync, only if you want it: an optional account keeps favorites, progress and settings in step across devices — without one, nothing leaves your device.
  • Ten interface languages, no ads: menus and stories alike come in your language, and the app never shows an advertisement.

Frequently asked questions

On which platforms is DeepChinese available?

DeepChinese is built from a single codebase for Android, iOS and the web. The Android app is available through Google Play, where it is currently in closed testing ahead of the public launch — the iOS app and the web version will follow.

What's free and what needs Pro?

The first 500 character panels are free forever, with search, favorites and flashcard lists included. Monthly (€3.99), yearly (€29.99) or lifetime (€99.99) Pro unlocks all 3,188 panels — every story, HSK deck and Deep Drill set.

How do the character stories work?

Every panel pairs a character with a short mnemonic built from its real components. Tap any component chip (like #40 or #44) to jump to that building block, so complex characters unfold into pieces you already know.

What can I read in the app?

Seven hundred graded stories — a hundred for each HSK band — each written using only the characters that band has taught, so you can read it start to finish without a dictionary. Tap any word for its pinyin and meaning. Many of the stories retell public-domain classics: ancient Chinese fables and idiom stories, Aesop's fables and folk tales.

Where is my data stored?

By default everything stays on your device: favorites, lists, settings and progress live locally, and studying never needs an account. If you create the optional account, that same data syncs to our account backend, hosted in Switzerland — and deleting your account, in the app or via the deletion page, removes it there.

How do I manage or cancel Pro?

Subscriptions are handled by the store you bought them from (Google Play / App Store), so you can upgrade, restore or cancel there at any time. Web purchases are managed from Settings → Subscription inside the app.

How do I get support?

Use the Contact / Help section inside the app's menu to reach us — we read every message and use your feedback to shape new stories, decks and features.

contact@deepchinese.nl

Does DeepChinese work offline?

Yes. All 3,188 panels, the 700 graded stories, the 121,431-word dictionary, the HSK word decks and the audio clips are bundled in the app, so you can study anywhere without a connection. Only account sync and the leaderboards need internet.
